This is a 15.2 mile out and back hike on the Baltimore County side of the Patapsco River, extending from Alberton Road to the base of McKeldin Park. Total elevation gain is modest (about 1,000 feet), there are no rocky sections to speak of, there are multiple stream crossings, and sections of the trail may be muddy if conditions are wet. Our pace will be moderate (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph), and lunch will be at a perch above the river. Given that this is a local hike with a very short carpool and no breakfast stop, it's reasonable for participants to expect to be back at their cars before 4 o'clock. Length: 17 miles; Elevation gain: approx. 3,500 ft. Hike to Signal Knob overlook, returning on the Maneka Peak and Tuscarora Trails to Elizabeth Furnace picnic area for lunch. After lunch, we'll hike up the Sherman Gap Trail to the Massanutten East Trail, returning on the Shawl Gap Trail. Great views from Signal Knob and along the Massanutten East Trail. This 11 mile hike is best described in halves. The first half, which is 5 miles long and ends after lunch, contains very little rocky terrain and only a few inclines. The second half of the hike, which starts right after lunch and is 6 miles long, is more challenging since it has many short but steep inclines and may include some bushwhacking. Both halves will have a moderate pace (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph). Most hikers will do both halves of the hike, but it's perfectly okay to do only the first half. Hike the Old Rag loop. Approximately 9 miles total from parking lot. Strenuous
1/2 mile vertical ascent in the first 2 miles from the base of Old Rag. Requires significant stamina and ability to lift oneself vertically several feet to get up a rock chute on the ascent. Return trail on the backside is moderate hiking. Excellent views along the ridge and from the top. National park entry fee paid at trail head or park pass required. This 13.5 mile modified circuit hike has plenty of water exposure (Hunting Creek, Hunting Creek Lake, and Cunningham Falls), enough rocky sections to make your socks sing, and a total ascent of 3,200' (including four steep climbs of 500' or more, three which occur before lunch). FRIDAY-SUNDAY - OCT 24-26 - EASTERN SHORE CANOE TRIP
Arrive Friday afternoon at the Manokin River property on Stewart Neck Road in Princess Anne. There is an option to arrive early and have dinner provided by Adrenaline High. Saturday will be shuttled over to Kings Creek and will paddle back to the Manokin River property approximately 9 miles. This trip can be added to by paddling into Princess Anne. Will go right under an Eagles nest. Sunday we will do an out and back paddle up Jones Creek which also has an Eagles nest with two babies and two adults. An alternate paddle could go out to the Manokin River to Raccoon Point the latter is more open water. The former is a more winding protected paddle. It's your group's choice.
