This demanding hike in West Virginia and Maryland proceeds from the banks of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers and climbs 1,000+ feet to the very peak of historic Maryland Heights and the ruins of Civil War gun emplacements – the Stone Fort. There are no stream crossings on this hike and about 1800 feet of elevation gain. Some of Maryland Heights overlook will be closed for peregrine falcon nesting.
