The hike to Ilchester Rocks features a number of moderate hills and stream crossings on trails including Soapstone, Santee Branch, Bull Run, Sawmill Branch and Buzzards Rock. The elevation gain is approx. 1300 feet. The hiking pace will be 2.5 to 3.0 mph. Bring lunch or a snack.

An out and back hike of a total of about 11.5 miles going north from Gathland State Park to the Rocky Run Shelter and return. Total elevation gain is 1600' with the longest climb of 750' over about 1.5 miles. Pace averages 2.5 – 3.0 miles per hour. When registering please indicate "Carpool" or "Trailhead".
Hike both along the river and a ridgeline towards Prettyboy Reservoir dam, then and downstream. There are some spots where the trail is rocky, narrow or hilly, so poles are recommended.

We will walk through the grounds and gardens and the trails through the woods, and a bit of Baltimore history. Some is flat, somewhat rocky/ hilly areas, should not be muddy. Rain or shine. If the weather is nice, it's a great place for a picnic after the hike!
